Tara May Tessimu talks to JRN 200 students

Tara May Tesimu tells students in Journalism 200 that citizen journalism works if you give it the proper care and guidance.

Tara May Tesimu visited the JRN 200 class on Thursday, March 25, to talk about her career since graduating in 2004 and her current role as community manager for Chicago Tribune’s hyperlocal Trib Local.

Tesimu told students her job consists of reporting, writing, editing, verifying and working directly with the community. Trib Local is a weekly print tabloid inserted into The Chicago Tribune on Thursdays, and a Web site as well. Tesimu’s role as community manager is to teach and encourage community members to post content from their communities.

Tesimu advised students to get as much experience as possible working for publications. While attending MSU, Tessimu (then Tara May) worked several semesters on The State News.

Tesimu also writes a blog about Trib Local, Inside the Newsroom.
